AMRPA Introduces a New Professional Certification for Rehabilitation Managers
Medical Rehabilitation Management Certification Applications Open June 1, 2021

(WASHINGTON, DC – May 24, 2021) –  This month, the American Medical Rehabilitation Providers Association (AMRPA) introduced a new certification program for medical rehabilitation management, designed to support new leaders and promote consistency and professionalism in the field. The Medical Rehabilitation Management Certification (MCMR) is intended for current rehabilitation managers as well as clinicians and other professionals who wish to advance their careers by moving into management roles.

Benefits of becoming certified include earning credibility and respect in the field of medical rehabilitation, building confidence in your knowledge of the industry, and opening more opportunities for advancement in the field by demonstrating your commitment to invest in career development as well as the medical rehabilitation profession.

Successful candidates should demonstrate the knowledge and skills in leadership, strategy, customer service, workforce, operations and results related to medical rehabilitation. More specifically, this certification will benefit therapy team leaders, neuro team leaders, nurse supervisors and other clinical and rehabilitation managers. Applicants are required to have completed a bachelor’s degree in a rehabilitation or related discipline, at least one year’s experience in a rehabilitation setting and one year in a supervisory position.

“The certification will enhance the foundational knowledge and skills that rehabilitation managers carry into their daily work as well as long-term program development. Rehabilitation managers with this certification will have a greater ability to support their teams and programming to provide the highest level of patient care possible,” said Christopher Thorson, PT, Therapy Manager at Essentia Health Miller-Dwan Rehabilitation, Duluth, Minn., and MRMC exam collaborator.

The MCMR was created by a volunteer group of more than 25 subject matter experts from AMRPA member hospitals who identified a gap in the industry for certified medical rehabilitation managers. Since 2018, these volunteers have worked to identify the necessary knowledge, skills, job tasks and abilities needed to successfully fill the role of medical rehabilitation manager. With the guidance of AMRPA’s exam development partner, Certification Management Services, Inc., the workgroup completed a 175-question exam covering the foundations of rehabilitation, compliance and ethics, hospital processes, electronic medical records, strategy and leadership skills.

“The collaborative work between the different highly qualified volunteers in this process ensured quality, uniformity and applicability of day to day skills and knowledge that are being evaluated in this exam.  It was exciting for me to learn the process of credentialing development, while ensuring a high-quality standard for the certificate and the profession as a whole,” said Clément J Hakim, PT, MBA,  Director of the Rehabilitation Center at Blake Medical Center, Bradenton, Fla., and MRMC exam collaborator.

Applications to sit for the exam will be accepted on the AMRPA website from June 1 to July 1, 2021. Successful applicants have through the month of July to complete their exam. Participants will be notified of their certification results up to three weeks after the exam.
