Episode 1: Stroke

Stroke impacts approximately 800,000 people in the U.S. each year and more than two-thirds of them receive inpatient rehabilitation services after they’re released from the hospital. Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability and the fourth leading cause of death. About one quarter of inpatient medical rehabilitation patients are there because of a stroke.

 Episode 2: Cancer

In this episode of Medical Rehab Matters, we talk about cancer and inpatient medical rehabilitation. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 1.9 million new cancer cases in the U.S. this year. Many of them will benefit from inpatient medical rehab at different points during and after their cancer treatment.

Episode 3: Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability among children and young adults in the United States. Each year an estimated 1.5 million Americans sustain a TBI; 230,000 people are hospitalized because of a TBI; and 80,000 to 90,000 people experience the onset of long-term disability due to a TBI.

With Brent Masel, MD, the executive vice president for medical affairs with the Centre for Neuroskills, and a clinical professor of neurology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Dr. Masel is a board member of the North American Brain Injury Society and the Brain Injury Association of America, where he serves as the national medical director. Episode 4: Innovative Technology

In this episode, we discuss innovative technology. We consider some of the key barriers that people with disabilities face in accessing assistive devices and technologies, and what can be done to help address those barriers. We also discuss some of the legislative and regulatory issues related to innovative technology.

In this episode of Medical Rehab Matters, we talk about amputation, prosthetics and inpatient medical rehabilitation. About 185,000 amputations occur in the U.S. each year and approximately 2 million Americans live with limb loss and that number is expected to double in coming years.

Our guests are Roseann Sdoia, who lost her leg in the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013, her doctor, David Crandell, MD, Medical Director of the Amputee Program at Spaulding, and Scott Riddle, CPO, a prosthetist and Vice President of Orthotics, Prosthetics and Bionics at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. Margi is a rehab nurse who has spent many years working with spinal cord injury patients. She is on the Adjunct Nursing Faculty at Brenau University, Norcross, Georgia and has been actively involved with the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) for more than 25 years. She has given numerous conference presentations, authored rehabilitation nursing guidelines, author-presenter of a CARF Webinar and two ARN Webinars, and author-presenter of several presentations for ARNs PRN (Professional Rehabilitation Nursing) course, in addition to other ARN volunteer activities.
